Stretcher course for building and construction industry, suitable for low angle stretcher movements.

This course is applicable to personnel who are required to participate in a rescue using, or assisting others to use, a patient  stretcher for evacuation or relocation, or for those required to supervise, manage, or provide safety role support to those workers.

It is delivered at your work location, subject to risk assessment in a 4 hour (nominal)  timeframe.

It may be delivered in conjunction with related Nationally recognised training e.g. First Aid/CPR, Spinal Care

In low angle scenarios live patient may be used for demonstration of casualty management and transport in a range of scenarios, eg stretcher stairs, First Aid Cages etc.  (subject to site risk assessment)

Focus is on appropriate casualty management and packaging/transport and first responder rescue team communication.

This course addresses elements of legislative requirements including reporting, rescue planning, risk management, human factors, equipment and rigging checks and the operation of client nominated  First Responder First Aid team movement of casualty using stretchers.

It includes information on casualty management including suspension trauma management and spine care according to published guidelines. Australian Resuscitation Council https://resus.org.au/

Training is contextualised for your rescue or recovery scenarios and is site / work environment specific. 

This is a competency-based industry training course which may provide PCBU’s and principal contractors with evidence of meeting parts of their general duty to ensure the workplace health and safety of themselves, workers, and other persons. 

This duty includes ensuring any person required to assist as First Responder in a rescue or evacuation using a stretcher is deemed competent through provision of sufficient information, instruction & training. 

The skills taught and assessed in this course are applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation & guidance, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 4 Hours

An individual undertaking this course will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry: 

● Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills  

● Capable of working under supervision in a team while being physically able to complete individual tasks relating to conducting a first response rescue operation, in a range of scenarios

Undertake basic casualty management and movement using a range of stretcher types, including spine boards.

This course is suitable for low angle stretcher movement.

Practical assessments

Prepare for, undertake & complete first response packaging and movement of casualty using stretcher/ancillary rigging

Recognises, selects, correctly sets up and nominates maintenance requirements for nominated stretcher system

Uses a documented First Response / rescue plan

 Engages in a team safety meeting to plan the scenario

Nominates local team and site safety personnel / rescue team leaders / external rescue & emergency services

Communicates understanding of signs of operational stress in self and others

Nominates appropriate risk controls for identified hazards and uses risk controls in stretcher scenario

Responds to internal & external situational cues before, during & after stretcher movement scenario

Contributes as part of a First Responder / rescue team to recover an incapacitated worker/mannequin in rescue scenario(s) using a stretcher in recovery or relocation scenarios

 Applies basic casualty management & movement including spinal care as part of First responder First Aid / rescue team

Uses spoken & written communication to effectively communicate before, during & after scenario

Uses two-way radios (trunked or UHF) to effectively communicate during scenario - optional

Uses appropriate manual handling techniques in team lifts

Recover rescue equipment / makes rescue scene safe 

Participates & contributes to a rescue scenario debrief and report 

Written assessments

Uses a documented SWMS / First Responder/First Aid response/ rescue plan 

This course does not lead to a nationally recognised certificate
