This course is applicable to personnel who are required to participate in a rescue using, or assisting others to use, a pre rigged rescue or recovery system / kit and stretcher recovery or evacuation system, or for those required to supervise, manage, or provide safety role support to those workers.

This course is particularly useful where a rehearsal of rescue plan and system is required to be demonstrated on site, as part of this course a written rescue plan can be collaboratively produced with stakeholder consultation. 

It is delivered at your work location, subject to risk assessment in a 4 hour (nominal)  timeframe.

It may be delivered in conjunction with related Nationally recognised training e.g. First Aid/CPR, Spinal Care

Rescue mannikins are used for high angle stretcher rescue scenarios to maintain participant safety. 

Focus is on first responder rescue team communication, care, use & maintenance of the pre rigged kit and stretcher use & practice drills in the use of the rescue and recovery system.

This course addresses legislative requirements including reporting, rescue planning, risk management, human factors, equipment and rigging checks and the operation of client nominated  first responder rescue/recovery/pre rigged rescue kits and stretcher in the nominated rescue scenarios.

It includes information on casualty management including suspension trauma management and spine care.

Training is contextualised for your rescue or recovery scenario and is site / work environment specific. 

This is a competency-based industry training course which may provide PCBU’s and principal contractors with evidence of meeting parts of their general duty to ensure the workplace health and safety of themselves, workers, and other persons. 

This duty includes ensuring any person required to participate in a rescue or assist as first responder in a rescue using a pre rigged rescue kit and stretcher is deemed competent through provision of sufficient information, instruction & training. 

The skills taught and assessed in this course are applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation & guidance, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 4 Hours

An individual undertaking this course will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry: 

● Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills  

● Capable of working under supervision in a team while being physically able to complete individual tasks relating to conducting a first response rescue operation, in a range of scenarios

Practical assessments

Performance Tasks – Prepare for, undertake & complete first response rescue using prerigged rescue kit  & stretcher/ancillary rigging

Recognises, selects, correctly sets up and nominates maintenance requirements for nominated rescue system

Uses a documented rescue plan

 Engages in a team safety meeting to plan the rescue scenario

Nominates local team and site safety personnel / rescue team leaders / external rescue & emergency services

Communicates understanding of signs of operational stress in self and others

Nominates appropriate risk controls for identified hazards and uses risk controls in rescue scenario

Responds to internal & external situational cues before, during & after rescue scenario

Contributes as part of a rescue team to recover an incapacitated worker/mannequin in rescue scenario(s) using a pre rigged rescue kit and stretcher in nominated high angle rescue or recovery scenarios

 Applies basic casualty management & movement including spinal care as part of first responder rescue team

Uses spoken & written communication to effectively communicate before, during & after rescue scenario

Uses two-way radios (trunked or UHF) to effectively communicate during rescue scenario - optional

Uses hand signals to indicate stop, raise & lower during rescue scenario

Recover rescue equipment / makes rescue scene safe 

Participates & contributes to a rescue scenario debrief and report 

Written assessments

Uses a documented SWMS / rescue plan
