This course has been designed in consultation with RM Watson and is applicable to all personnel who are required to work from, or use, swing stages for a range of workplace tasks at nominated RM Watson sites.

This course addresses planning, risk management, routine safety & operational checks, unpowered descent, and emergency response for using Swing stages and associated equipment. 

Training is contextualised for construction and maintenance workers.

Delivery on site, Swing stage installation must be RM Watson approved.

Course Delivery

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 4 Hours

White card for applicable State or Territory

Current First aid training

Current Work safely at heights training

Hard hat with approved RM Watson chin strap or lanyard, or climbing style helmet with full harness

Glasses lanyard

Gloves on clip

Hi vis shirt , long pants 

Safety boots or shoes

Physical fitness to allow access to and from Swing stages

Basic metric numeracy to identify load plans for swing stage, and assess weights of tools , equipment and items/debris removed from building or structure

Course is delivered in written and spoken English.

RM Watson may approve the use of contractor supervisors to translate course information and trainee responses during training according to specific site requirements.

There must be at least one English speaking worker per swing stage to facilitate communications in breakdown or emergency situations.

Written

Complete RM Watson Swing stage inspection, paperwork or electronic - identify & correctly name key components aligned with pre start documentation

Practical

  • Identify key items that must be in swing stage prior to commencing work – First aid kit, fire extinguisher, charged two way radio, tool tethers, crank tethers, wind meter
  • Identify additional safety features (including their correct configuration) added to swing stage boats and overall installation – hi backs, mesh, catch nets, marine carpets
  • Confirm Safe Working Load (including point loading) for the swing stage where work is to be undertaken
  • Select, inspect and don fall arrest harness, connect to horizontal static line in swing stage using fall arrest rated lanyard, demonstrate buddy checks when working with the fall protection system.
  • Identify First aid kit and its key contents uses, e.g. bleeding control, emergency blanket
  • Identify and demonstrate (simulation) use of fire extinguisher
  • Identify and use (simulation) remote communications equipment as applicable to site eg mobile phone, two way radio, nurse call
  • Identify known hazards and controls e.g. height of the building (work in isolation & travel time) , dropped objects, wind, lightning, swing stage boat/ropes contact with the building, power cable snags & breakages, electrical, fall from height hazards, access scaffold and landing deck security, fire 
  • Identify known defects for hoist motors e.g. unusual noise conditions, impact damage to hoist motor casing, wire ropes, swing stage boat (cradle), and rostrum (suspension rig) 
  • Identify exclusion zones and security requirements and correct signage at zone entries
  • Identify Rostrum (suspension rig) components, wire ropes independent anchorage systems, hoist limit switch and/or overload systems where fitted) , counterweight systems, power board and power cable systems and security arrangements for non authorised persons access
  • Undertake daily low level pre start swing stage hoist motor control checks, hoist raise, lower, hoist motor power selection switch where fitted, check emergency stops override hoist controls, check GPO circuit breaker, check Skylock (secondary overspeed brake) , check slack rope cutout where fitted, test emergency unpowered descent lever, check emergency unpowered ascent crank system in place (use system in training)
  • Demonstrate use of buddy system for fitting fall prevention PPE and during swing stage hoisting and lowering (driver and watcher)
  • Demonstrate appropriate response to breakdown e.g. loss of power to hoist motors, or emergency e.g. medical, caught in inclement conditions, contact/caught on building or structure
  • Demonstrate end of operation shut down and secure swing stage procedures e.g. land securely on deck, ensure wire ropes have sufficient tension to prevent contact with building facade, tie off power cable, engage emergency stop button, cover the motor, clean swing stage boat and secure any loose items on deck against high wind conditions.
  • Demonstrate appropriate situational awareness while operating swing stage
  • Identify appropriate verbal and written reporting methods for identified defects or safety issues according to RM Watson and site specific procedures
