This course is applicable to personnel who are required to inspect & where required apply an in tension proof test and provide a serviceability decision on fixed anchor points, static lines(horizontal & vertical) and rail systems used for height safety, record relevant details in a log or register and report/quarantine / send for service any unserviceable equipment, or for those required to supervise, manage, or provide safety role support to those workers.

This course addresses legislative requirements including WHS Law, Codes of Practice, personal accountability, record keeping & reporting, risk management, standards, manufacturer technical guidance, practical use of in tension proof testing equipment, human factors, manual handling considerations, equipment types, common names & Standards terminology, tagging, labelling, quarantine procedures & reporting. 

Training is contextualised for inspection of commonly encountered systems installed in a a range of environments, including roof mounted systems.

This is a competency-based industry training course which may provide PCBU’s and principal contractors with evidence of meeting parts of their general duty to ensure the workplace health and safety of themselves, workers, and other persons. This duty includes ensuring any person required to conduct equipment inspections, make judgement calls on serviceability and make records of findings is deemed competent through provision of sufficient information, instruction, training & experience. The skills taught and assessed in this course are applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation & guidance, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice. 

This course does not replace any manufacturer stipulated training or accreditation requirements for inspection of their particular systems.

Course Delivery

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 7 Hours

Due to the nature of this work attendees require a work at height training qualification and currency of competency for work at height.

Near vision acuity (Jaeger No.1) shall permit reading a minimum of Times Roman 4.5 points vertical height where 1 point = 0.3528 mm (1/72 inch) at not less than 30 cm with one or both eyes, either corrected or uncorrected.

This certificate does not require renewal

Assessment Activities

Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:  

Performance Tasks – Prepare for, and undertake height safety system anchor point, static line and rail inspections

  • Recognises & locates relevant Legislation, Codes of Practice and Standards 

  • Recognises & locates relevant Manufacturers technical installation and inspection guides

  • Applies relevant guidance from Legislation, standards and manufacturers guidance for inspection

  • Sources and applies company SOPs for inspection procedures

  • Describes human factors impacting equipment inspectors & conduct of inspection works

  • Describes environmental factors impacting conduct of inspection works

  • Nominates appropriate risk controls for identified hazards in a range of inspection scenarios

  • Source and use appropriate PPE for inspection tasks

  • Source and use appropriate in tension calibrated proof tester

  • Source and use appropriate supplementary lighting and visual inspection aids

  • Use hand tools to test termination integrity 

  • Describes basic material properties for alloy metals, synthetic fibres and thermoplastics

  • Recognise system plate and ID plate requirements

  • Recognise fixed anchor point types and conditions exceeding discard criteria

  • Recognise wire rope types and terminations and conditions exceeding discard criteria

  • Recognise rail system types and terminations and conditions exceeding discard criteria

  • Recognise equipment types, shackles, eyebolts, lifting lugs, rigging screws and turnbuckles

  • Access & interprets manufacturer technical data sheets & advisory notifications

  • Locate and interpret equipment markings according to manufacturer’s advice

  • Nominates commonly encountered failure modes for a range of system and equipment types

  • Recognises, selects, and correctly sets up nominated equipment for inspection and testing

  • Undertakes a methodical inspection of equipment using sight, touch, function & measurement checks

  • Demonstrates use of measuring instruments, includes tape measure and vernier callipers 

  • Applies labels / tags to equipment, nominates when not appropriate to affix tags

  • Uses a register or log to record inspection findings information

  • Describes & applies quarantine, fault reporting & send for service/repairs procedures

  • Cleans work area, stows equipment correctly and reports inspection findings on completion


Documentation – The student must complete all documentation according to the required standard:

  • Static line and rail system inspection record task sheets


Theory assessment -   There is no other written theory assessment for this course.


Other evidence collection – Heightsafe Solutions trainer / assessor will complete an observation checklist detailing the required performance outcome for each student. We collect video and picture evidence of task completions which are stored securely with the training records of that session. Please let us know beforehand if there may be security or personal issues with us collecting this type of evidence.
