Theatre Rigging Fundamentals

This course is designed to establish a solid foundation in the core theoretical principles and practical skills required to operate safely and competently with standard rigging systems in theatrical venues and live performance facilities.

Anchored in Work Health and Safety (WHS/OHS) compliance and industry best practices defined by the LPA (Live Performance Australia) Codes of Practice, this introductory training introduces the essential knowledge areas critical for starting out in theatrical entertainment rigging. 

It covers common hardware and rigging equipment, routine care, inspection protocols, and fundamental maintenance requirements. 

Core safety practices—including basic load math, Safe Working Load (SWL) limits, Working Load Limits (WLL), knots, and dead-hang techniques—are thoroughly addressed. 

Course Objective

 To establish baseline rigging practices safety, reduce on-site risk, and prepare entry-level technicians and venue staff for responsible engagement in everyday theatrical rigging operations.


This course may be teamed with Theatre Rigging Intermediate to create a comprehensive one-day training package.

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Face-to-Face face-to-face contact time of at least 4 Hours

This course has no entry requirements and is suitable for entry level theatre riggers and those responsible for their supervision.

This certificate does not require renewal

There is a written questionnaire and a practical activity  observation checklist.

Photos and videos may be taken and retained as evidence by agreement.

This course does not lead to a nationally recognised certificate
