This Stretcher Course has been designed &  tested for application in Civil & Commercial Construction sites, Heavy Industry, Quarries and Above Ground Mining and Waterfront and Marine Sectors

Suitable for low angle patient movement in basket (Stokes litter), Spine Boards, foldable litters or soft stretchers.

This course is applicable to personnel who are required to participate in a patient transfer and movement using a stretcher while operating within a team, or acting as team leader, if suitably qualified.

Also suitable for those required to supervise, manage, or provide safety role support to those workers.

It is delivered at your work location, using your on site stretchers, subject to risk assessment in a 90 minute (nominal)  timeframe.

Training is contextualised for your particular patient movement scenarios, site specific. 

It may be delivered in conjunction with related Nationally recognised training e.g. First Aid/CPR, Spinal Care, Manual Handling, Rescue, Confined Space.

Focus is on appropriate casualty management & packaging/transport in a team, using on site stretcher equipment in accord with manufacturer instructions.

This course addresses elements of legislative requirements including PCBU & worker responsibilities, company reporting and risk control.

It delivers information on casualty management, movement & spine care according to published guidelines. Australian Resuscitation Council https://resus.org.au/


This is a competency-based industry training course which may provide PCBU’s and principal contractors with evidence of meeting parts of their general duty to ensure the workplace health and safety of themselves, workers, and other persons. 

This duty includes ensuring any person required to assist as First Responder in a rescue, evacuation or patient movement using a stretcher is deemed competent through provision of sufficient information, instruction & training. 

The skills taught and assessed in this course are applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation & guidance, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 1 Hour 30 Mins

An individual undertaking this course will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry: 

● Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills  

● Capable of working under supervision in a team while being physically able to complete individual tasks relating to conducting patient movement using a stretcher, spine board or litter in a low angle environment 

● English language communication skills in reading, writing and spoken language equivalent to ACSF L1

Undertake basic casualty management and movement using a range of stretcher types, including spine boards.

This course is suitable for low angle stretcher movement.

Practical assessments

Prepare for, undertake & complete first response packaging and movement of casualty using stretcher/spine board / litter

Recognises, selects, and correctly sets up nominated stretcher system

 Engages in a team safety meeting to plan the patient movement

Communicates understanding of signs of operational stress in self and others

Nominates appropriate risk controls for identified hazards and uses risk controls in stretcher scenario

Responds to internal & external situational cues before, during & after stretcher movement scenario

 Applies basic casualty management & movement including spinal care as part of First responder First Aid team

Effectively communicate before, during & after scenario

Uses appropriate manual handling techniques in team lifts

Recover, clean and return stretcher to storage location

Participates & contributes to a rescue scenario debrief
