What This Course Covers

This half day, face to face course is suitable for those required to operate a pendant controlled O.E.T. (Overhead Electric Travelling) cranes with three or fewer powered operations, with operators having line of sight control of loads.

Also suitable for crane users, those responsible to ensure the crane is maintained in a serviceable condition, that the lifting equipment is correctly maintained and that operators required to use the cranes are Competent Persons in accord with available Safety Regulator guidance.

Compliance & Duty of Care

This is a competency-based industry training course that may assist PCBUs and principal contractors to demonstrate compliance with parts of their general duty of care to ensure the health and safety of:

  • Workers

  • Themselves

  • Other persons at the workplace

Skills taught and assessed are applied in accordance with:

  • Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation

  • Australian/New Zealand and relevant international standards

  • Industry codes of practice

 Important Licensing Notice

This course does not replace statutory licensing requirements for prescribed high-risk work occupations such as:

  • Dogging

  • Rigging

  • Crane operation of some prescribed classes

Course Delivery

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 4 Hours

Participants must be 18+ and have English literacy/numeracy, sufficient to communicate and understand instructions, read and understand Company procedures and Crane Operator Guide and lifting gear labels and be able to identify and calculate load mass to be lifted. 

PPE (steel-capped boots, high-vis vest or shirt) is required.

Industry experience is recommended and is an element required to demonstrate your ability to undertake O.E.T. crane operator tasks as a "Competent Person"

Under the model Work Health and Safety Regulations, only a “competent person” with relevant training, qualifications or experience can carry out certain notified tasks in the workplace.

This certificate has an industry recommended renewal period of 60 months

1. Prestart checks

  • Obtain procedures and instructions 
  • Inspect the crane, identifying the hoist, bridge, runway, power feed -busbars and  wire rope and hooks condition.
  • Inspect lifting gear
  •  Controls Check: Testing the remote/pendant to ensure directions correspond to crane movement and checking the emergency stop function.
  • Checking clear and safe load paths, deploy barriers and/or signs, notify those in lift areas
  • Fault Reporting: How to tag out and report unserviceable equipment.

2. Practical Operation 

  • Load Control: lifting a load just off the ground to check stability (the "test lift").
  • Swing Control: Techniques for "catching the swing" (dampening load sway) while moving the bridge or carriage.
  • Precision Placement: Navigate a course (e.g., through a corridor of cones or obstacles) and place the load gently on a target.

3. Shutdown Procedures

  • Raising and park the hook to a safe height to avoid pedestrian / vehicle collision.
  • Park the crane in a designated bay
  • Isolating the main power/switch.

4. Final Practical Assessment / VoC (Verification of Competency)

  • Candidates must safely lift, transfer, and lower a load following a specific path without hitting obstacles.
  • Demonstrate a full pre-start and post-operational check.
